Each week during the 2017 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week will be honored for outstanding defensive play. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch lists.
The players of the week for week one are:
Maxwell Award Player of the Week – Josh Rosen – UCLA
Rosen led a comeback for the ages Sunday night as the UCLA Bruins came back from a 34-point deficit to defeat the Texas A&M 45-44. Rosen threw for 491 yards on 35/59 passing and scored all 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. He will look to keep the momentum going this week as the Bruins host Hawaii on Saturday.
Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week – Josey Jewell – Iowa
Jewell’s defensive effort helped the Iowa Hawkeyes hold Wyoming to just 3 points this past Saturday. Jewell recorded 7 solo tackles, 7 assisted tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks in the 24-3 win. He will look to continue his dominance this week as the Hawkeyes take on in-state rival Iowa State this Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.
