The Maxwell Football Club today announced that University of Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban has been selected as the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award winner for the 2016 season. Saban has led the Crimson Tide to a 14-0 record and a No. 1 ranking heading into Monday night’s National Championship game versus Clemson.

SEC Champion Alabama has been ranked No. 1 in the country every week since the beginning of the season. And with Jalen Hurts, Saban is trying to become the second coach to ever win a national championship with a true freshman quarterback. Barry Switzer did it at Oklahoma with Jamelle Holieway in 1985. The Crimson Tide will try to become the first college team to go 15-0 — a mark that Clemson barely missed last season. Saban is also chasing some personal history with a chance to tie the record set by legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant by earning a sixth national championship.

Previously, Saban has won the AP College Football Coach of the Year (2003, 2008), Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (2003, 2008), Home Depot Coach of the Year (2008), Walter Camp Coach of the Year (2008), Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year (2008), Sporting News Coach of the Year (2008), Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year (2014) and SEC Coach of the Year (2003, 2008, 2009, 2016).

Saban has won five national championships (four at Alabama, one at LSU) and seven SEC championships (five at Alabama, two at LSU) during his coaching career.

Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert commented, “Coach Saban has engineered a tremendous season for the University of Alabama football program. The team’s 14-0 record is a great testament to the hard work of Coach and his staff, and also to the dedication shown by the student-athletes involved in the program at Alabama. To go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 ranked team in the country is almost impossible and has been only been done three times in the history of college football. It is just an amazing accomplishment.”

Coach Saban will be honored Friday, March 10, 2017 at the 80th Maxwell Club National Awards Gala, which will be held at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. Also receiving awards at this event will be; Lamar Jackson – Louisville (Maxwell Award), Jonathan Allen – Alabama (Chuck Bednarik Award), James Conner – Pittsburgh (The Thomas Brookshier Spirit Award), Trace McSorley – Penn State (Brian Westbrook Tri-State Player of the Year Award), James Franklin – Penn State (Tri-State Coach of the Year) and Steve Spurrier – South Carolina/Florida/Duke (The Francis Reds Bagnell Award for Contributions to Football). The Maxwell Football Club will announce the winners of the Bert Bell Award (Professional Player of the Year) and Earl “Greasy” Neale Award (Professional Coach of the Year) in January. Other MFC Awards at the high school, college and professional levels will also be announced in early January.
