Honoring Excellence at all Levels of Football

Player of the Week Awards

Each week during the 2018 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize outstanding performances with two weekly awards. The Maxwell Player of the Week Award will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams, and the Chuck Bednarik Player of the Week Award will be honored for outstanding defensive play. Players selected do not have to be represented on the Maxwell or Bednarik Award watch lists.

  • Alvin Davis

The Zips were outgained by Northwestern, yet still bagged their first win over a Big Ten opponent since 1894. How? An opportunistic defense. Davis fueled an improbable second-half rally in Evanston with a pair of pick-sixes, one for 97 yards and the clincher from midfield. He also had 10 tackles in a shocker that saw the 21-point underdogs score three defensive TDs in the final 18 minutes.

  • Kyler Murray

Maxwell Award winner Baker Mayfield couldn’t defeat Iowa State in 2017 but Murray got revenge for his former teammate. The Sooners were once again challenged by the scrappy Cyclones, leading by only seven in the fourth quarter. However, Murray took charge by completing 21-of-29 for 348 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks. Pro Football Focus’ highest-rated Week 3 quarterback also led OU with 77 rushing yards, helping offset the season-ending injury to RB Rodney Anderson.
