Archie Manning & Brent Musburger Announced as First Members of the Joseph V. Paterno Award National Selection Committee
National Football Foundation Chairman Archie Manning and veteran ABC sportscaster Brent Musburger have been designated as the first members of the National Selection Committee for the Maxwell Football Club's Joseph V. Paterno Coach of the Year Award.
Manning, a native of Drew, Miss., is one of college football's all-time great players. During his college career at the University of Mississippi, he threw for 4,753 yards and 56 touchdowns and ran for 823 yards. He scored 14 touchdowns in 1969. In both 1969 and 1970, he was named to the All-SEC team and his No.18 jersey was retired by Ole Miss. He finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting in 1969 and third in 1970. Manning was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
After his college career at Ole Miss, Manning was drafted in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints with the second overall selection. Manning played 13 years in the NFL and finished his career having thrown for 23,911 yards and 125 touchdowns. He also rushed for 2,197 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1978 and 1979 and was the NFC Player of the Year in 1978.
His community activities include the Louisiana Special Olympics, the New Orleans Area Boy Scout Council, the Salvation Army, United Way Speakers Bureau, Allstate Sugar Bowl Committee, New Orleans Sports Foundation, and National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Board of Directors. Archie and his wife Olivia reside in New Orleans and have three sons, Cooper, Peyton and Eli.
One of the most recognized and prominent voices in the history of sports television, Brent Musburger serves as a host and play-by-play commentator for multiple sports across ESPN and ABC. Musburger primarily works college football and basketball game telecasts, highlighted by Saturday Night Football on ABC since 2006, the inaugural season of the first and only weekly prime time college football series on broadcast television. Beginning with the 2009-10 season, Musburger has worked ESPN's Big 12 Big Monday college basketball games with Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Knight. He has called the Little League World Series every year since 2000.
Musburger attended Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism before joining the Chicago American. His broadcast career began in 1968 as sports director at WBBM-TV in Chicago.
"It is a great honor to have Archie Manning and Brent Musburger as part of the selection committee for the Joseph V. Paterno Award," said Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert. "Archie had tremendous success on the football field as both a college and professional player, but he has continued to give to the game of football and to his community long after his playing career ended and Brent has had a long and storied career as a sportscaster and journalist. They epitomize the tenets of what the Joseph V. Paterno award stands for and he will be a tremendous asset in evaluating candidates who best fit the criteria for selection."
The Joseph V. Paterno award was established this year by the Maxwell Football Club in recognition of the legacy of excellence that Coach Paterno established in his long career as the Head Football Coach at Penn State University. The inaugural award will be presented in December 2010 and candidates will be evaluated on criteria that will include, on field success, commitment to the development of well-rounded student-athletes, and involvement in the community.
Members of the Paterno Award National Selection Committee will be announced throughout the spring. Additional information on the Joseph V. Paterno Award can be found on the Maxwell Football Club website www.maxwellfootballclub.org or by calling Executive Director Mark Wolpert at 215-643-3833.
