The Maxwell Football Club announced on the ESPN nationally televised College Awards Show on December 9, 2004 that Jason White, University of Oklahoma quarterback, has been selected as the winner of the 68th Maxwell Award as 2004 College Player of the Year. In a three-way race, White received 166 first place votes of the 730 votes cast, with 143 second place and 86 third place for 870 points on a 3-2-1 basis. Second place went to USCs Matt Leinhart with 164 first place, 119 second and 98 third for 828 points. Third place went to Jason Whites teammate, Adrian Peterson, who received 127 first, 111 second and 125 third place votes for 728 points. The remaining 273 votes were divided among 12 other nominees. In the voting for the 10th Annual Bednarik Award, College Defensive Player of the Year, University of Georgias David Pollack was first with 150 votes of the 726 cast. Texas Derrick Johnson was second with 146 votes and Wisconsins Erasmus James was third with 132 votes. The remaining 298 votes were divided among 15 other nominees. In the voting for the 16th Annual George Munger Award as College Coach of the Year, there was another very close race. University of Utah coach, Urban Meyer, narrowly nosed out Auburns Tommy Tuberville with 206 votes to Tubervilles 203 votes. Third place went to Wisconsins Barry Alverez with 128 votes. The remaining 186 votes of the total 723 cast were divided among 10 other college coaches. Voters for all the Maxwell College Awards are NCAA Head College Football Coaches and SIDs, members of the Maxwell Football Club & sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country.
