Jay Accorsi, Rowan University
Richard Wackar, who started the football program at the school more than 40 years ago, still follows the team and he was most impressed with Accorsi’s work in the past season. “What a magnificent job Jay did with some of the injuries, just amazing,” Wackar told Kevin Callahan of the Courier-Post. Accorsi’s success earned him the Maxwell Club’s Tri-State coach of the year award. His overall record as head coach at Rowan is 38-9 with three conference titles. He was named NJAC Coach of the Year three times, including the 2005 season. Accorsi, 42, is the seventh football coach at the school previously known as Glassboro State. He assumed the head coach duties after spending nine years as an assistant coach with the Profs. That’s the way they do things at Rowan. Every head coach, with the exception of Wackar who launched the program, was an assistant under the previous head coach. “It has been a family-type thing over the years,” Accorsi said. “All the success I had and John Bunting and K.C. (Keeler) had was laid by the foundation started by Coach Wackar and Coach (Ted) Kershner. The success we’ve had is from what they built.” A native of Somers, CT, Accorsi was a three-sport star at Somers High School. He attended Nichols College in Dudley, MA, where he was a running back and team captain. He graduated in 1985 and began working in the athletic department while pursuing his master’s degree. Accorsi was named assistant football and baseball coach at Nichols in 1989. He was hired as an assistant coach at Rowan in 1993. He succeeded Keeler in 2002. Accorsi is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and the New Jersey Football Coaches Association. At Rowan, he has been an advisor for Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and served on the Campus Aesthetics and Environmental Concerns Committee. He also serves on the Harrison Township Recreation Commission. He resides in Mullica Hill, NJ with his wife Nancy and
daughters Gabrielle and Rachel and son Jack. |
