Jim Henry Award
High School Player of the Year

<back

Zak Magid, Lower Moreland High School

Zak Magid and Ron JaworskiA little over fifteen years ago, the Maxwell Football Club decided to give an award to the Area's High School Football Player of the Year.  It was decided by the Board to name this award in honor of our Chairman of the Board, Jim Henry.  Jim Henry agreed to have his name on the award on the following conditions:  the player had to be a student-athlete, someone who placed academics ahead of sports and this player had to be a young man who was involved with his high school and community; in other words "a good citizen."

This year, the Maxwell Football Club believes they found a young man that fits the criteria that Jim Henry had set in Zak Magid of Lower Moreland High School.

Zak truly is a student-athlete, he scored 1500 on his SAT's and is ranked 11th in his class of 140 at a school that places emphasis on academics.  Zak, an honor student, is a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist and a member of the National Honor Society.   Zak was honored as High School Student of the Month and received a U.S. National Leadership Merit Award.

On the football field, he is truly the sixty minute man.  He is a runningback, the kicker and long spanner on punts on offense and a linebacker on defense.  He is in on every play.  His stats are quite impressive.  He holds the school's single season record for rushing with 1,511 yards on 278 carries (5.4 yards per carry average).   Zak also holds the school's career average for rushing with 2,707 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns.  In his last season, he had 141 tackles with 343 career tackles.

He was named MVP Bicentennial League as well as MVP Independence League; he was First Team All League as a running back and linebacker in grades 10, 11 and 12.  Zak has been a member of two League and District One Championship teams.

Zak is team captain and has six varsity letters in football, baseball and track.

Active in his school and community, he is President of the Student Government, leader of numerous school activities and service organizations.  Zak is also a member of the school newspaper.  In his community he's a volunteer referee and coach for the Community Athletic Association.

His coach, Mark Mayson says of him, "He is a great leader.  Zak Magid exemplifies all the best qualities of a true student-athlete.  He is an outstanding student, football player and citizen."

That statement defines what a winner of the Jim Henry Award should be!
