Justin Sands, The Hill School
For the last thirteen years, the Maxwell Football Club's High School Selection Committee has kept that mandate. This year, we feel that we are carrying on the tradition, the winner of the 14th Annual Jim Henry Award as the Area's Student Athlete Player of the Year is Justin A. Sands of The Hill School. Justin, a 6 foot, 230 pound junior is a two way lineman, a starting offensive center, defensive tackle and long snapper. In 1998, he was named Maple League (Prep School League) First Team Defense, the only junior to be selected. Despite a heavy academic schedule, Sands lettered in football and wrestling in 1997 and 1998. He is also on the track and field team (shot put and discus) and plays midfield and defense in lacrosse. Justin is an honor student at the prestigious Hill School and has never allowed his sporting pursuits to interfere with his academics. On the third part of what Jim Henry wanted "a good citizen", Justin certainly meets the criteria. On his 15th birthday, his cousin, Jordon Specht, succumbed to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a little known disease, at the young age of 14. Devastated by this loss, Sands wanted to know more about this affliction that claimed his cousin. After some research, he found the Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation. In an effort to help the foundation, which does not receive grants or funding from the federal or state governments. He decided to volunteer for the foundation, with the help of his family, they decided to sponsor the First Annual Jordon David Specht Golf Tournament. Justin and his family presented the foundation with a check in the amount of $39,000. This was, by far, the largest fund raiser ever held for Ehlers-Danlos. This money will be used to produce a disk for CD ROM that will explain EDS and the signs to look for in an EDS victim. During the Christmas season he work for a local Hallmark store and volunteered his time for the EDS Foundation, the store donated the money in lieu of paying him. Justin has involved himself in many other fund raisers to heighten the awareness of this disease. Justin said" I just want to be able to help keep other children and young adults from dying." We are sure at the Maxwell Football Club, that Jim Henry would feel that this young man is a "a good citizen!" |
